3. On Saturday, February 22nd, the Coldest Night of the Year walk will take place all over Canada. Thousands of people will walk to raise money to provide food and shelter for homeless people. The money raised in Belleville will go to Grace Inn Shelter. Joanna Hoekstra has formed a team for our church and is hoping that others will join the team or donate money to the team to support Grace Inn Shelter. The walk is 5 Km or 2 Km (whichever the walker chooses).
The walk begins and ends at Grace Inn Shelter which is located at 315 Church St.9.
It begins at 5:00 PM. St. Thomas’ Church will be a rest/washroom stop. Snacks will be provided to the walkers. The walk route stays within that area. Last year over 300 walkers participated in CNOY. Team St. Thomas’ had 15 walkers. For more information, to donate, or to join the team, please go to the website cnoy.org or call Joanna Hoekstra at 613 962 4837.
4. PWRDF Did You Know That:
In July 2022, a 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck Abra province in the Philippines, causing landslides and flash floods that devastated infrastructure and essential water systems. The Barangay Ballayangon communities of Pugo, Topap, and Agimitan were severely affected, losing their access to clean water. In response, the Cordillera Disaster Response and Development Services (CorDis), with funding from the Canadian Embassy in Manila, partnered with the Primate’s World Relief and Development Fund (PWRDF) to rebuild these water 9. systems. By spring 2023, community members, in collaboration with local organizations, including the Bangowan Farmers’ Association (BAFA), had constructed four new water systems. These systems provided clean water to 81 families directly and an additional 69 families indirectly, benefiting 150 families in total across 114 households, as well as an elementary school and daycare center. Rosemarie Lingbawan, chairperson of the BAFA organization, expressed gratitude, noting how the new water systems have eased the burden on women who previously struggled to fetch potable water.
