5. Did You Know That:
Girls and young women in Lesotho often fall victim to gender-based violence (GBV) and child, early, and forced marriage (CEFM), which are perpetuated by cultural norms, a lack of awareness and poverty. Despite being signatories to international legislation prohibiting these practices, GBV and CEFM remain normalized within communities, with alarming statistics highlighting the prevalence of violence against women. These harmful practices perpetuate cycles of trauma and injustice, undermining the well-being and rights of girls and women.
The Safer Communities Project, a partnership between Help Lesotho and PWRDF, initiated on July 1, 2021, seeks to address these pressing issues by empowering individuals and communities to advocate for social justice and prevent the transmission of HIV. Through education, leadership development, and psychosocial support, this project endeavours to equip vulnerable populations with the knowledge and skills needed to create healthier and more sustainable futures. Help Lesotho’s extensive experience in women and girls’ empowerment projects positions them as valuable partners in addressing GBV and CEFM in Lesotho.
By working together, the project aims to create safer communities where girls and women can thrive free from violence and discrimination.
