What is a Refugee?

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) defines a "refugee" as a person who has fled his/her country of nationality (or habitual residence) and who is unable or unwilling to return to that country because of a "well-founded" fear of persecution based on race, religion, nationality, political opinion or membership in a particular social group. This definition of a "refugee" excludes those who have left their homes only to seek a more prosperous life.

"There is no greater sorrow on earth than the loss of one's native land."
- Euripides (431)

Why is sponsorship so important?

The refugee population around the world is enormous. There are more than 42 million refugees and internally displaced people. Today, the Canadian government usually processes refugee claims one individual or family at a time, not in large groups of displaced persons as it was years ago. This process is extremely slow and has limited capacity. Private sponsorship is a crucial and integral part of the refugee landscape since it first appeared in Canada more than 30 years ago.
We sponsor refugees out of love and sharing. We share the freedom we enjoy and the abundance we have. We share because we are all one in the human family.

“It is my belief that as humans we share a citizenship greater than that defined by borders and territorial boundaries. It is our citizenship to the human race that unites us, that transcends our religious and cultural differences and invests us in not only our own futures, but in the future of all mankind”
- Anonymous.

Who we are...our mission

The Quinte Interfaith Refugee Sponsorship Committee (QIRSC) is a constituent group of people from community faith groups and the community at large, whose aim it is to provide sponsorship for refugees from any part of the world, particularly those who do not have any other means of obtaining sponsorship especially families with children. We believe that regardless of faith, every human has the right to live a life free from fear and persecution. “Everyone has the right to seek and enjoy in other countries asylum from persecution” Universal Declaration of Human Rights

What we have done

The Quinte Interfaith Refugee Sponsorship Committee started in 1996. They have successfully sponsored families from Bosnia, Rwanda and Ethiopia, the Congo, Columbia, and currently Kurdish families from the Middle East.
